Broadening the global perspective is at the top of the agenda in current urban historical research. In contemporary Japanese urban history, it is widely held that the prototype of the modern city emerged in the decades between 1900 and the 1930s, against the backdrop of accelerating urbanization, as concepts of modernity—in the sense of regularity, functionality, and rationality, which contributed to the establishment of mass culture and ultimately to social mobilization for “total war.” This perspective aligns with that of European urban history.
