City buildings Ruhr project with an exhibition at the Museum Folkwang

The project “Stadt Bauten Ruhr: Research, Teaching, Participation” (TU Dortmund, Baukunstarchiv NRW, Museum Folkwang; funded by the BMBF) examines objects from the collections of the Baukunstarchiv NRW with a view to their potential to tell the story of the Ruhr region—beyond industrial culture—as a multifaceted urban history.

The exhibition “And Something Like This Stands in Gelsenkirchen…” Cultural Buildings in the Ruhr Region after 1950 (Museum Folkwang, Essen, September 11, 2020–January 10, 2021) highlighted the wide range of cultural buildings in the Ruhr region—from museums and theaters to community centers—and revealed the unifying visions behind them. The exhibition “UmBAUkultur – Gerber Architekten and the Transformation of the Dortmunder U” (August 22–September 30, 2020) took place on the university floor of the Dortmunder U, highlighting both the processes of transformation typical of the region and the significance of cultural buildings as venues for discourse. The publication “Und so etwas steht in Gelsenkirchen…” Kultur@Stadt_Bauten_Ruhr (edited by Hans-Jürgen Lechtreck, Wolfgang Sonne, and Barbara Welzel) offers insights into the project’s networked approach and showcases the treasures of the archive. Accompanying the exhibition was the photo essay by Lukas Höhler, “Ein Haus in der Straßenlandschaft. Das Dortmunder U.”
